The high rate of marital distress and divorce, especiallywithin the first few years of marriage, seems to indicate thatcouples are not adequately prepared to deal with the challenges ofmarriage. Concern for this issue has prompted professionals topropose mentoring for premarital and newly married couples as a wayof helping them prepare for marriage. Significant research in theareas of business, education, and at-risk youth reveal thatmentoring offers numerous benefits for those who are engaged in it.This study takes a look at the mentoring process and its effect onthe attitude and behavior of premarital couples. Triangulation ofdata was used in the form of a mentoring survey and a focus groupso that information could be collected for concurrent validity. Theresults of this study showed that marriage mentoring was mosthelpful in the areas of helping couples have more realisticexpectations for marriage and as a way of providing support andconfidence for starting marriage. It also indicated that differenttypes of couples may benefit in different ways from the mentoringexperience according to their strengths and growth areas.
