On a headland at the eastern tip of the Isle of Mull, where the Sound opens into the Firth of Lorne and the tides run fast between the island and the mountains of Morvern, stands a castle that has been watching the sea for eight hundred years. Duart Castle - Caisteal Dhubhairt, the castle of the dark headland - is the ancestral seat of Clan MacLean, one of the great warrior clans of the Scottish Highlands. This is its story.

What the Stone Remembers is a narrative history of Duart Castle and the people who built it, lost it, and brought it back. Drawing on primary sources including medieval charters, Privy Council records, London Gazette notices, and the remarkable Board of Ordnance surveys of 1741 and 1748 - among them drawings by Paul Sandby, one of the founders of the Royal Academy - the book tells the full story of the castle and its clan across eight centuries of Scottish history.

That story begins with the MacDougalls, who first fortified the headland in the thirteenth century, and with the marriage in 1367 by which Lachlan Lubanach MacLean secured the castle for his clan - a marriage that required a papal dispensation and produced a dynasty that would hold Duart for more than three hundred years. It encompasses the height of the Lordship of the Isles, when the MacLeans were the military backbone of a Gaelic kingdom that rivalled the Scottish crown itself; the catastrophic Battle of Harlaw in 1411, where Red Hector MacLean died fighting; and the forfeiture of 1493, after which the clan found itself navigating a world it had helped to make but no longer controlled.

At the centre of the book stands one of the most extraordinary episodes in Highland history: the night in the 1520s when Lachlan Cattanach MacLean of Duart carried his wife, Lady Catherine Campbell, out to a tidal skerry in the Sound of Mull and left her there to drown. She was the daughter of the Earl of Argyll. She did not die. What followed - the revenge, the feud, the generations of Campbell encroachment that ended with the MacLeans losing Duart itself in 1691 - is one of the great tragic narratives of the western Highlands, told here in full for the first time in popular form.

The book follows the clan through the Cromwellian occupation, when six warships anchored in the Sound and an English garrison held the castle for eighteen years; through the Jacobite risings and the final surrender; through two centuries of diaspora, as MacLeans made new lives in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, in New South Wales and New Zealand, carrying the memory of a castle most of them had never seen. And it follows the extraordinary figure of Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean - soldier, Victorian adventurer, centenarian - who purchased the ruins of Duart in 1911 at the age of seventy-six, restored them stone by stone, and raised the MacLean standard from the battlements for the first time since the surrender of 1691.

Written in the tradition of popular narrative history - rigorous in its scholarship, vivid in its storytelling - What the Stone Remembers is also a meditation on what castles mean: how stone outlasts the people who cut it, how buildings become the memory of the communities that made them, and how a clan dispersed across the world by history and economics can still, two centuries later, feel the pull of a headland above a Scottish sea.
