USS Arizona BB-39

Some warships are remembered for their victories. Others endure because one decisive moment transformed them into permanent witnesses to history, loss, duty, and national memory.

USS Arizona BB-39: Battleship Design, Pearl Harbor, Crew, Destruction, Memorial & Historical Memory follows the complete story of the ship beneath the memorial-from the strategic ideas that shaped her construction to the events of 7 December 1941 and the long process through which her wreck became one of the most significant naval memorials in the world.

Written for naval-history enthusiasts, collectors, modelers, and informed readers, this volume connects design, service, combat, human experience, salvage, archaeology, and remembrance within one clear historical narrative. Technical details are explained through their practical consequences, revealing how armor, machinery, armament, modernization, and shipboard organization influenced Arizona's capabilities and vulnerabilities.

Inside, the reader will discover:

• How the Pennsylvania-class design reflected American battleship doctrine, Pacific strategy, oil-fired propulsion, concentrated protection, and the twelve-gun main battery

• How Arizona changed during the interwar years, including fleet exercises, modernization, aviation facilities, fire control, crew routines, and her role within the Pacific Fleet

• How the Pearl Harbor attack unfolded aboard the ship, including readiness, bomb damage, the forward-magazine explosion, rescue efforts, casualties, and the surviving evidence used to reconstruct the destruction

• How the wreck became a memorial, from salvage decisions and recovered weapons to underwater archaeology, survivor interments, preservation challenges, and the creation of the USS Arizona Memorial

The result is a compact, visually focused, and historically substantial guide that allows the reader to understand Arizona as a designed battleship, a working naval community, a wartime loss, an archaeological site, and a place of enduring remembrance.
