The Republican, Or La Mort

The sky was not fixed. We put our shoulders under it, and it moved.

In the bright spring of 1792, Paris is a city intoxicated by the promise of rebirth. For twenty-one-year-old Étienne-Marie Reynaud, a typesetter from Lyon, the Revolution is not just a political movement-it is a clean font of standing type waiting to be set true. Alongside Camille, a brilliant and reckless writer who lives perpetually between sentences, and Rosalie, the fiercely intelligent woman who gives those words breath, Étienne believes that an ordinary man can stand in any darkness and light it from within.

But when the drums of war beat across the Seine, the intoxicating wine of idealism turns to blood.

Swept from the print shop to the front lines of the Flanders mud, Étienne trades his compositor's apron for a musket. As the Reign of Terror descends upon France, virtue becomes indistinguishable from suspicion. Trapped in the brutal arithmetic of survival, Étienne faces an agonizing choice: to protect the Republic he serves, he must spell out the destruction of the friend he loves.

Fifty years later, sitting by a window in Lyon, an old man looks back at the scaffolding of the heavens he tried to build out of murderous things. From the mud of Valmy to the rise of a young Corsican general named Bonaparte, The Republican Or La Mort is a sweeping, deeply intimate epic of the French Revolution. It is the tragic record of a mind making a heaven of its own hell, and the devastating price of turning living men into standing type.
