Scholarship on the psychology of peace has been accumulating for decades and several thousand research studies have been conducted in this area since the end of the Cold War. However, the research has been predominantly problem-focused. In other words, the approach employed through these decades of research on peace has focused primarily on addressing and preventing the problems associated with conflict and violence and less on the solutions associated with peace. Concerns around nuclear annihilation, enemy images, discrimination, the denial of basic human needs, terrorism and torture have been the main focus. The Psychological Components of a Sustainable Peace moves beyond a prevention-orientation to the study of peace, toward a more complete view of the necessary and sufficient conditions for sustainable peace. In order to do so, the focus must be shifted towards more promotive-orientation and study peaceful situations and effective peace processes directly.
