The Flat Circle Theory

Hegesias of Cyrene argued that happiness is unattainable - not because life is unusually cruel, but because the body suffers, the mind suffers with it, and fortune cannot be governed. The rational aim becomes the avoidance of pain rather than the pursuit of pleasure. Antiquity found the conclusion disturbing enough that Cicero reports his work was suppressed at Alexandria.This essay takes that argument and adds a second premise Hegesias never held: that time is a flat circle, and existence recurs. If the same life returns without terminus, then the failure of happiness stops being a contingent fact about one life and becomes a structural feature of existence itself. Death acquires a double function - relief for the organism, and, for the temporal system, the closing operation that makes the circle a circle.Working through Nietzsche, Benatar, Camus, and the Buddhist escape claim, The Flat Circle Theory states its own conditions of failure and refuses the consolations available to it. The argument is conditional and says so. What it will not do is flinch.
