The English Kitchen Garden

A celebration of English gardens where beauty and productivity go hand in hand, this beautiful book explores remarkable locations including Highgrove, the royal garden of His Majesty King Charles, revealing how ornament, cultivation, and seasonal abundance can be brought into inspiring balance

Explores a rich variety of English gardens where cultivation, design, and daily life are closely intertwined. From the celebrated grounds of Highgrove Gardens to the more intimate setting of Dean Manor, the book reveals how fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and ornamental planting can be combined to create gardens of beauty, character, and purpose. Spanning some of Britain’s most admired gardens, the book shows the many ways productive gardening can be interpreted and elevated. These are gardens where kitchen plots, greenhouses, fruit cages, and flower‑filled borders are central to the life of the house, and where ornament and utility exist in thoughtful balance. As the South Wood Farm chapter suggests, they are places shaped by husbandry, craftsmanship, design, and care, with productivity embedded in the wider landscape. This is a portrait of a way of living—rooted in seasonality, cultivation, and a close relationship to nature. Eva Nemeth’s photography vividly captures the atmosphere of these gardens, bringing their abundance and beauty to life.
