In the days after Bellweather Cut, Esmée's circle is fractured, injured, and watched. The wall still bleeds exposed names, Pike Holdings is already moving through lawyers, Savard can barely stand after voiding his command authority, and Milo will not let Esmée mistake apology for repair. Then August's black-marked map begins tapping at Calcite, and Junie traces the exported Bellweather field report to a recipient above Roussel: a Board data architect building something called the Source Model.
Calcite is not preparing a public ceremony. There is no bell rope, no memorial unveiling, no obvious sacrificial stage. Instead, the lock is being fed through intake: school hearing tests, child-services interviews, emergency wellness calls, legal depositions, disability evaluations, guardian medical scans, and relief applications. The Board is collecting first fear, delayed answers, breath pauses, refusal timing, guardian resonance, and echo-return distortion. Their goal is not to copy Milo, Noé, or Tavi perfectly. It is to predict when living sources will contest a false yes and preempt that contestation through systems the public already trusts.
Esmée arrives with a burned palm and a blackened key that no longer opens seams on command. Milo agrees to help only under the Bellweather contract: if he says stop, she stops her body first. Thierry, Rowan, and Lucien follow guardian pressure into Calcite's old quarry clinic and discover a terrifying invitation. The guardian network is not demanding that they die as payment; it is offering to make living guardians into a regional door, a way for the locks to recognize one another through bodies that survive.
Junie, stripped of safe archive authority, must invent a counter-method based on narrow living custody instead of publication. Tavi hears voices after Calcite changes them and realizes the system is testing how to make kindness function as compliance. Noé and Céleste, from Saint Calais, attempt a limited distance refusal but find the Source Model anticipating the shape of Noé's wait.
As Odette is forced to reveal August's Calcite name and the history of guardians who died useful, Esmée faces the book's defining crisis: the only fast rescue would require overriding Milo's stop again. To save the sources without owning them, the circle must prove that consent ethics can work against preemption, not just spectacle, and that a living no can still arrive where a system has already predicted it.
