The Bamboo Paradox

We have all heard the advice: If you want to cope with the never-ending increases in stress and strain in the modern world, then we have to become more like the simple bamboo. The bamboo bends with the wind, and therefore survives the storm better than more brittle trees and buildings.

In this book I describe two case studies which clearly show that flexibility - being like a bamboo - is an inadequate metaphor for good coping skills in the modern, deregulated marked economy of 24/7 cities; and the encroaching end of the weekend; the end of economic and social security; and the end of personal privacy and individual rights.

And, as I sit here and write this, I realize that what we need to be, to face these challenges, is a cross between a Zen Monk, and a muscular leopard!
