The Baker and the Innkeeper

One grumpy innkeeper. One sunshine pastry chef. And a foggy little Maine town that absolutely refuses to mind its own business.

June Calloway has quit the job, sublet the apartment, and driven four hundred miles north - the last stretch by ferry, through fog the color of dishwater - to start over as the new pastry chef at the historic Nightingale Inn. She is ready for early mornings and salt air. She is not ready for the man blocking her kitchen doorway, scowling at her as though she is the one who does not belong.

Graham Hartwell gave up everything to keep his family's inn standing, and he runs it the way he runs himself: carefully, quietly, with a long list of things he is not allowed to want. He did not hire a pastry chef. He cannot afford one. And he has no idea what to do with the woman who just fixed his temperamental oven in ten minutes flat and smiled at him like the whole day was hers.

When a burst pipe forces June onto the family floor, forced proximity does what forced proximity does - and the careful distance between them begins to give. Then a wall comes down during a kitchen renovation and reveals a hidden ledger: guests who paid nothing, stayed in secret, and checked out into brand-new lives - in a careful hand dated 1971. Because the Nightingale Inn used to keep more than visitors, and Graham's grandmother is not quite the woman her family believes they know.

But when a glittering offer in Portland calls June back toward the career she always planned, she must choose between the life she meant to build and the one quietly waiting for her on the coast - if a guarded man can finally find the courage to say the one word that would make her stay.

The Baker and the Innkeeper is a standalone, closed-door small-town romance - grumpy-meets-sunshine, forced proximity, found family, championship-level small-town meddling, and one gentle, decades-old secret that unspools across the series. Kisses on the page, everything else behind closed doors. Pie throughout. Book One of the Nightingale Inn.
