Sophoclis Fabulae

"Sophoclis Fabulae" is a definitive collection of the surviving works of Sophocles, one of the most influential playwrights of ancient Athens. This volume encompasses the seven extant tragedies that have shaped the course of Western literature: "Ajax", "Antigone", "The Trachiniae", "Oedipus Rex", "Electra", "Philoctetes", and "Oedipus at Colonus". These plays stand as masterpieces of the tragic form, characterized by their psychological depth, intricate plot structures, and exploration of the tension between individual morality and societal or divine law.

Through the struggles of iconic figures like Antigone and Oedipus, Sophocles delves into universal themes of fate, justice, and the inherent fragility of human happiness. His innovations in dramaturgy, including the introduction of the third actor and a greater focus on character development, transformed the theater of his time. "Sophoclis Fabulae" offers readers and scholars an essential gateway into the profound philosophical and emotional landscape of 5th-century BCE Greece, preserving the power of Sophocles' verse for successive generations. This collection remains an indispensable cornerstone for any study of the classical tradition and the enduring nature of human tragedy.
