ROLANDO CÁRDENAS (b. 1933, Punta Arenas, Chile) was the author of six books of poetry. Trained as a civil engineer in Chile's southernmost province, Cárdenas quickly became a rising star in Santiago's vibrant poetry circles of the 1950's and 60's. Though he received many of Chile's top literary prizes, in the wake of Augusto Pinochet's 1973 military coup, Cárdenas was incarcerated for his communist ties. Throughout this decades-long regime, Cárdenas's work was heavily censored and eventually fell out of print. Despite these hardships, Rolando Cárdenas remains well-known nationally as a writer of la soledad magallánica, or the specific solitude of the Magellan-region's far-flung locale.
