River

Gregor's lonely existence is transformed when he finds a new Seer. Ayola is born into slavery on a Mississippi plantation in 1810. Like Gregor, she can see her own guardian angel. His determination to watch over her changes everything. 

He finds unexpected fulfillment, friendship and love in the community of Natchez. He marries Rosy, delighting in her sweet companionship, despite knowing that eventually he will be left alone. He excitedly prepares the town for the arrival of the first steamboat. He befriends the Duncan brothers, one who claims ownership over Ayola, and one who finds a secret and forbidden love with a burly dockworker.

When Gregor's nemesis Mason arrives in town, bent on harming Rosy, the Seer's Guardian helps him lay a trap for the brigand. But when the plan falls apart, and everything dissolves in chaos and fear and pain, Gregor learns that even he cannot control everything. 

Life in early Natchez contains joy, beauty and emotional depth. But it is also fraught with the horrors and hardships which infiltrate a society based on slavery. River contains some very dark scenes which might be disturbing for some readers. But with a Seer in town, love can still find a way to thrive.
