She just wanted her family to like her. Instead, she angered a goddess.

Rachel is trying. Trying to bond with her new stepkids. Trying to impress her husband. Trying to prove that this blended family vacation to Hawaiʻi will be the trip that finally brings them together.

So when she pockets a small black rock from the edge of Kīlauea volcano-ignoring the signs, the warnings, and her eight-year-old daughter's quiet protests-she tells herself it's just a souvenir. Something spontaneous. Something fun.

What begins as a string of bad luck quickly becomes something more. The rain that follows only her. The food poisoning that strikes only her. The sea turtle incident filmed by her stepdaughter. The sunset sail she curses with bananas. The encounters with a mysterious woman in red who keeps appearing-and vanishing-at the edges of her vision.

As the family travels from the Big Island to Maui to Kauaʻi, the disasters grow worse and the rock in Rachel's bag grows heavier. Her marriage strains. Her stepchildren pull away. And the volcano goddess Pele, who does not forgive easily and does not forget at all, is just getting started.
