Six mornings stand between a soul and the Table. What will it find there?
Panting for God walks a soul through the days of preparation before the Lord's Supper, one meditation at a time, from a Sunday bulletin through the small hours of Saturday night, to the Table itself. Psalm forty-two becomes the road: a deer bent low at a dry brook, tears eaten like bread, a soul strong-armed by its own memory, deep calling unto deep, and mercy under orders to arrive on time.
These eight meditations were first written for one flock, in the ordinary week before an ordinary Communion Sunday. They are offered here for every flock, and every season, that has ever asked the psalmist's own question of itself: why art thou cast down, O my soul?
