NULL Cure

A new antiviral called Null is released under emergency authorization. It suppresses immune overreaction and stops the virus spreading through major cities. The treatment works. Hospitals stabilize and infection rates drop.

Within weeks, doctors begin seeing new symptoms.

Patients stop reacting to pain. They injure themselves without hesitation. Some chew through their own cheeks. Others walk on broken bones. Emotional response fades. Fear disappears. Compliance rises.

Federal investigator Sloane Mercer is assigned to review the drug's approval process after a firefighter dies during a rescue while showing no reaction to catastrophic injuries.

At the same time, special operations officer Daniel Reyes begins seeing the same pattern in treated soldiers. Training accidents escalate into serious harm because the treated personnel do not stop when someone is injured.

Mercer and Reyes discover the drug is not failing.

Null alters specific regions of the brain responsible for fear, emotional processing, and behavioral restraint. The company that developed it predicted severe neurological damage in a percentage of the population but labeled those outcomes "acceptable loss."

Mercer and Reyes attempt to expose the data behind the drug while being hunted by the same system distributing it. Treated guards, patients, and officers become increasingly dangerous as emotional restraint disappears.

Their investigation leads them to Dr. Elias Vorn, the scientist who created Null. Vorn believes fear causes more damage to society than disease. His goal is to remove panic from the population and replace it with controlled stability.

He plans to refine the drug through mass distribution.

As Mercer and Reyes uncover the final stage of the program, they learn that Null was only the first step.

A second iteration is already being deployed.

Stopping it may require destroying the system that now runs the country's emergency response network.
