You already work two jobs. The second one does not pay, and you cannot quit.
One tired evening, watching football with the sound off, I turned the sound on and heard a commentator make me want one team to win. Sound off, and the wanting went. Then I recognised the other one: the voice in my own head that had been grading my life for as long as I could remember. There was no button for that one.
No Dust is about that second job: the unpaid work of keeping up a picture of yourself and grading it, narrated by a commentator who never signs off. It follows that voice through the oldest books we have, from the Buddha's arrow and Job's silent friends to the Desert Fathers, Rumi's polished wall and Pascal's quiet room, and through one ordinary life, which begins at a swimming pool with five metres of air between a father and his son. Each of those books heard the voice, and each left a word about it.
Thirteen centuries ago, the story says, a monk wrote on a monastery wall that the mind is a mirror to be wiped clean, again and again, so that no dust can settle. A man who could not read answered him on the same wall. This book chooses his reply, and brings it down to two words.
This is not a method. It is the book about what we add to the methods, and the two words you can say when the commentator starts.
You will pick the cloth up again. That is not the failure. That is Tuesday.
