Miss Pym Disposes

Miss Pym Disposes

Josephine Tey

BeeGee Dark Classics • Book 12

At Leys College, everyone is being examined. Not everyone will pass.

Lucy Pym has become an unlikely celebrity. Once a teacher, she is now the successful author of a bestselling book on psychology-and supposedly an expert on why people behave as they do.

When an old friend invites her to spend a few quiet days at Leys Physical Training College, Lucy expects a pleasant escape from lectures, admirers, and her newfound reputation. Instead, she enters a close-knit world of talented young women approaching one of the most important moments of their lives.

Examinations are under way. Careers are being decided. Coveted appointments are within reach. Beneath the discipline and companionship of college life run quieter currents of ambition, rivalry, disappointment, loyalty, and resentment.

Lucy watches with fascination.

She forms impressions. She notices tensions. She believes she understands the personalities around her.

Then an apparently ordinary accident changes everything.

What begins as uneasiness becomes suspicion, and Lucy finds herself confronting a question far more difficult than anything in her books on psychology: how well can we really know another person?

First published in 1946, Miss Pym Disposes is one of Josephine Tey's most distinctive mysteries. Rather than beginning with a crime and racing toward a solution, Tey patiently builds a community before allowing its hidden pressures to emerge. The result is a beautifully controlled psychological mystery about ambition and fairness, observation and assumption-and the dangerous distance between believing something and knowing it.

But discovering the truth is only part of Lucy Pym's dilemma.

Once she believes she knows what happened, she must decide what to do about it.

And that may be the harder mystery.
