The increasing liberalization and globalization of the world economy has not been accompanied by convergence in the various indicators of economic and social development. The papers in this volume go some way towards explaining why the increasing reliance on market forces may lead to greater divergences in economic performance. They also point to the importance for the development process of social solidarity and institutions which encourage co-operative approaches to problem solving. Renee Prendergast is the author of "The Machine Tool Industry in Developing Countries" (with M.M. Huq), "Choice of Technique in Iron Founding" (B.A. Bhat) and "Development Perspectives for the 1990s" (with H.W. Singer). Frances Stewart is the co-editor of "The Economics of New Technology in Developing Countries" (with Jeffrey James), editor of "Employment, Income Distribution and Development", and author of "International Co-operation: A Framework for Change" (with Arjun Sengupta) and "North-South and South-South: Essays on International Economics".
