Petrus Lotichius Secundus was one of the most important German poets writing in Latin in the sixteenth century. This book is a literary biography of that poet. Born in 1528, eleven years after Luther's initial 95 theses, Lotichius lived in an age torn by religious and political conflict, much of which he experienced first-hand. His elegies, written in the classical tradition, chronicle his times. They also reflect deep dismay at the state of the world in which he lived and a yearning for peace, harmony, and religious unity. At his death in 1560, at the age of 32, Lotichius left behind a body of work which spoke with continued relevance and power to his countrymen during the equally troubled period which followed. This biography offers both an account of his life and an analysis of his poetic achievement.
