Over the last few years, the concern about how§demographic changes, especially population aging,§affect macroeconomic variables, public sector fiscal§balance and intergenerational transfers. A related§question is how the provision of social security§benefits affects retirement decisions of older§workers. The literature on retirement behavior in§developed nations is extensive, but little is known§about this issue in emerging economies. The rapid§population aging in developing countries raises§concerns about living conditions, social support and§health care provision for the elderly. This book§provides new insights into the debate on social§security and retirement by analyzing Brazil, one of§the few emerging economies with both rapid population§aging and large public pension system. The results§show a clear picture of a process of increasing early§retirement over the past fifty years. The book also§show that the pattern of retirement are not§homogenous across sub-groups of population.
