Seventeen-year-old Kai, a Kootenai Indian, lost his hand when he was three, but it didn't keep him from becoming the head of his household when his Grandfather died. His parents were killed soon after he was born. How does Kai tell Anna that he isn't what she thinks he is? Having only one hand is only part of Kai's problem. Kai of Bonners Ferry brings to light the complicated and little-known issue of AID, Amputee Identity Disorder. The issue of self-demand amputation is explored in order to better understand the feelings and motivations associated with this syndrome. This fictional story is based on the personal experiences of the author.
