New York, 2025. Leah Marchetti is an investigative journalist with eleven thousand Substack subscribers and a habit of following sources further than editors are comfortable with. The anonymous text arrives on a Tuesday morning. The FedEx locker in Dumbo contains four items: a carbon copy in an acid-free sleeve, a photograph with a face excised from the frame, a Bell Labs internal memo from 1971 with a red circle around a number, and a handwritten note that reads: She knew. They all knew. Find out who they were.

Six months later, Leah has the full documentation: the patent, the suppression, the derivative architecture, the surveillance record, the telecommunications law that formalised what had been built without consent. The record is complete. The chain of evidence is unbroken.

The problem is what to do with it. Every channel through which that record might travel is itself part of what she has spent six months documenting. Every platform, every algorithm, every infrastructure that connects a story to its readers answers to something. The silence has had eighty-four years to make itself structural. Leah has a plan. The question is whether the silence has anticipated it.
