India Interlude

Arriving in a relatively unknown corner of India, these Americans are at first bewildered by their surroundings. Despite soon becoming enthralled with this fascinating country and its people, they encounter growing tensions in their group, in India, and in the greater South Asian region.

It's 1971, and India is changing, much like the diverse group of Americans suddenly staying for several months. World events impinge on all their daily lives, imbuing their experiences with conflict, romance, social injustice, and intercultural complexities, creating profound personal changes.

Charmed by the country, the Americans stop seeing differences and instead find commonalities, immersing themselves fully in their new environment. Their individual paths of self-discovery include Diane delving into the country's craft traditions, Paul working to improve the lives of downtrodden women, Barbara tutoring a young sweeper, Sharon glimpsing a strong religious tradition, and others who find in India the motivation to redefine their own lives.

While this novel is inspired by true events and rooted in a particular place and time, it is also a universal story of the power to overcome obstacles and the ability to change. It's a journey that can't be measured simply in miles.
