Maria Elena Martinez's "Genealogical Fictions" is the first in-depth study of the relationship between the Spanish concept of "limpieza de sangre" (purity of blood) and colonial Mexico's "sistema de castas," a hierarchical system of social classification based primarily on ancestry.
