What happens after miners decide a pile of rock has little value?
In the highland mining communities of Benguet, Kankanaey women look again.
From Debris to Meaning enters the world of usal, the material released from the tunnel, the usalan, the shared space where women gather, and kulog, the skilled practice of reading and sorting debris for traces of gold.
Grounded in a phenomenological study of fifteen Kankanaey women, Wilbert B. Wanas follows the knowledge carried in their hands, eyes, memories, relationships, and years of experience. Their work reveals forms of expertise often overlooked in accounts centered on tunnels, extraction, and male miners.
Through participant voices, field observations, cultural concepts, and scholarly narrative nonfiction, the book examines gendered labor, motherhood, livelihood, Indigenous knowledge, bodily skill, uncertainty, kinship, and belonging.
The women portrayed here do more than recover ore. They sustain households, teach younger generations, negotiate the social world of the usalan, and preserve ways of knowing formed through long engagement with land, labor, and community.
From Debris to Meaning asks readers to reconsider where mining knowledge resides, whose labor counts as skilled, and what becomes visible when attention shifts from the tunnel to the women working beside it.
This description stays faithful to the manuscript. The study involves fifteen Kankanaey women, and the book explicitly frames usal, usalan, and kulog as material, social, and embodied dimensions of women's mining work. The Research Note also identifies the work as scholarly narrative nonfiction grounded in interviews, field observations, analysis, and validated participant accounts. KDP permits formatted descriptions but prohibits contact information, prices, promotional claims, reviews, and similar material, so I intentionally excluded those.
