Humans manifest nature. We are flesh and bone, pursuealimentary satisfactions and necessities, traffic in carbon, oxygen, and chemical processes. Yet humans are ethically unique. Welive from elements that exceed the interactions of simple, discreteatoms and their reactions, elements that possess us and to which werespond with responsibility. But others live from the same elementsthat we do, seek the same place in the sun as us, and call on us tosupport that life. The milieu of existence is the elemental, theair we breathe, the water we pull into our cells, the earth thatnourishes. On the other hand, the milieu of human existence is asocial moment of unavoidable response, whose element is inexorabletrust. This work explores our relation to the elements and to otherhumans under the notion of chôra. Drawing on Hercalitus, Plato,Bachelard, Levinas and others, Facing Nature advocates lookingbeyond atomistic cosmology, and atomistic understandings of humanbeing.
