Environmental organic-chemical analyses of water and sediment samples from the industrial area of Kavala city, Nothern Greece

Coastal regions are specific ecosystems often polluted by anthropogenic organic emissions. Organic-geochemical analysis requires a sensitive methodology, enabling detection and identification of a wide qualitative spectrum of organic compounds. Within the scope of this thesis, the coastal area of Kavala City in Northern Greece has been considered as a model region to study anthropogenic organic emissions, due to the significant local density of anthropogenic emission sources. Marine water, sediment and soil samples have been retrieved and extracted with organic solvents. The extracts have been investigated qualitatively and quantitatively by non-target screening approach based on gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry. Such a procedure meets the requirement for detection and identification of a broad range of organic xenobiotics. Moreover, the concept of anthropogenic markers has been used in the systematization of the results for identification and evaluation of source specific contributions. The results enabled a weighing of the anthropogenic impact with respect to the marine and terrestrial environment as well as the appearance of emission hot spots.
