A Smaller Life, Better Lived

You do not need to abandon a good life. You may need to change its size.

A meeting, a useful object, an unread message, or a possible future can keep asking for time, attention, money, space, coordination, and proof. None is necessarily wrong. Together, they can make a life too large to inhabit well.

A Smaller Life, Better Lived offers a practical way to reduce those continuing claims while protecting the people, responsibilities, useful ambitions, and delights that matter. The five-step Keeping Test helps you:

• name what a commitment, object, channel, or status demand keeps asking from you;
• separate duty and devotion from habit, fear, possibility, and proof;
• count the full cost, including work transferred to other people;
• choose an honest size: keep, shrink, share, season, or release;
• protect what remains without turning every open hour into another project.

With humane, imperfect examples, carefully qualified research, and tools you can use immediately, this book shows how to make a calendar clearer, a home more workable, attention quieter, and shared responsibility fairer.

Smaller does not mean empty, pure, or withdrawn. It means building a life you can return to.
