In the summer of 1904, thirty-two men lined up in St. Louis to run twenty-four miles through choking dust and 90-degree heat, past automobiles that nearly killed them and a single water station that failed them entirely. Fourteen finished. One was disqualified for hitching a ride in a car. Another nearly died from the very "medicine" his own trainers gave him to keep him standing. A third, a Cuban postman who'd never trained a day in his life, stopped mid-race to eat green peaches from an orchard and still finished fourth. History remembers it, when it remembers it at all, as a punchline.

Twenty years later, journalist Maud Keller sets out to tell the truth of that afternoon - not the version that fit in a headline, but the one she spent two decades gathering, mile by mile, letter by letter, from the men who lived it and the handful of people who tried to help them.

1904 is Keller's account: a patient, unflinching reconstruction of one of sport's strangest and most human days, and of everything the official record left out. There is Thomas Hicks, carried across the finish line more dead than alive, who later joked about spelling his name right for the papers. There is Fred Lorz, whose stalled-car "victory" made him a national joke before it made him, a year later, an honest champion in Boston. There is Felix Carvajal, laughing his way through catastrophe with nothing but the clothes on his back and a stranger's kindness. There are Len Taunyane and Jan Mashiani, South African runners exhibited at the Fair as curiosities by day and running, unremarked, as athletes by night - the distinction the whole book keeps circling back to. And there is William Garcia, who nearly died of dust inhalation feet from a well nobody thought to guard, his last letter home still folded, unsent, in his jacket.

Behind them stands James Sullivan, the AAU official whose unwavering certainty in his own judgment cost men their health and, in one case, nearly their lives - and who never once looked back. And weaving through it all is Keller herself: a woman reporter fighting for a byline in a newsroom that didn't want her, corresponding for decades with trainers, officials, widows, and strangers who trusted her with pieces of a story bigger than any one of them could tell alone.

Written in the discursive, self-questioning voice of a journalist raised on exhaustiveness rather than speed, 1904 is a novel about institutions that perform the appearance of care while quietly failing the people in their charge - and about the ordinary people, a farmer's wife with a well, a Cambridge pub full of strangers, a foundry crew reading a newspaper aloud, who did what those institutions would not. It is a book about who gets remembered and why, about the cost of telling an inconvenient truth twenty years too late rather than never, and about the particular, hard-won dignity of finishing - or trying to - when nobody is watching and nothing is at stake but your own word to yourself.
