War Between Peru and Chile, 1879-1882

Clements R. Markham's The War Between Peru and Chile, 1879-1882 is a detailed historical account of the Pacific War, a devastating conflict that reshaped the geopolitical landscape of South America. Markham, a distinguished historian and geographer with deep ties to Peru, provides a compelling narrative of the war's origins, major battles, and the far-reaching consequences for both nations. The book examines the causes of the war, including territorial disputes over nitrate-rich regions in the Atacama Desert, and the economic and political tensions between Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. Markham chronicles key battles, such as the naval engagements at Iquique and Angamos, the land campaigns in the Tarapaca and Tacna-Arica regions, and the eventual Chilean occupation of Lima. Through meticulous research, he analyzes military strategies, leadership decisions, and the resilience of the Peruvian and Bolivian forces despite overwhelming odds. Markham's perspective, sympathetic to Peru, offers insights into the war's impact on Peruvian society and the harsh realities of Chilean victory, including the annexation of valuable territories. His account not only sheds light on the war itself but also explores its long-term effects on South American diplomacy and national identities. A vital resource for historians, military scholars, and those interested in Latin American history, The War Between Peru and Chile, 1879-1882 provides an engaging and informative study of one of the most consequential conflicts in the region's history.
