Helping with A Level Maths at Home

A revision timetable pinned to the fridge, a teenager hunched over a textbook, a parent hovering nearby, unsure whether to wade in or walk away. You want to help, but A-level maths looks nothing like what you remember from school. Emma Cartwright offers a reassuring, plain-English companion for parents and carers who don't want to become full-time tutors, but do want to give steady, effective support at home. Rather than reteaching the syllabus, she explains how A-level maths is structured and assessed, what exam boards such as Edexcel, AQA and OCR actually care about, and where students commonly slip up. Short 10-15-minute home routines form the heart of the approach: simple questions to ask, quick checks that reveal misunderstandings, and low-pressure ways to revisit algebra, calculus, trigonometry, vectors and statistics/mechanics without turning the kitchen table into a battlefield. Each chapter translates key ideas into everyday language, so you can notice when something doesn't quite make sense and gently steer your child back on track. You'll also find guidance on talking with teachers and tutors, agreeing realistic roles at home, and fitting maths support around real family life, part-time jobs and other subjects. The aim isn't to turn you into a mathematician, but to help you feel calm, useful and confident that you're pulling in the same direction as your teenager's school.
