Engram

Fourteen years should be enough to make a life your own.Inside a commissioned study, Ruth leaves an architecture practice and turns an abandoned estuary pumping station into West Reach Hall. She falls in love with Lev, a lighting designer who understands what the old rooms can do. The hall opens; people fill it; the future becomes ordinary, and therefore hers.Outside, architect Mara meets the woman she expected to recognize. Engram can give her a useful report, but Ruth's life has become a retained resource scheduled for cutover. With the deadline approaching, Mara tries to save one person. Ruth wants something harder: a choice that belongs to everyone who calls the Long Country home.As residents argue over who may continue, who will remain, and what can be promised, both women have to confront the difference between caring for a life and claiming it.Engram is intimate literary science fiction about memory, architecture, family, and the limits of love—a tightening story that offers the right to continue, not a guarantee of forever.
