Elect Lady

Every member of the Order of the Eastern Star knows Electa—the woman represented by the red point, the cup, and the virtues of charity, hospitality, and faithfulness under persecution. Yet the "e;elect lady"e; of 2 John is never clearly identified, and the biblical letter says nothing about the martyrdom described in the traditional story.Who was the real woman behind Electa? In The Elect Lady, Dr. Douglas Reece follows a fascinating trail through Scripture, early Christian testimony, archaeology, and the published writings of Rob Morris. The journey begins in a crowded house in Capernaum, where Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law, and continues along the missionary roads of the Roman Empire to the persecution of Christians under Nero. The evidence reveals that Peter's unnamed wife was far more than a silent figure standing behind a famous apostle. Scripture indicates that she traveled with Peter, while Clement of Alexandria remembered the apostles' wives as fellow ministers who carried the gospel into places their husbands could not enter. Another early tradition records Peter encouraging his wife as she was led to her death: "e;Remember the Lord."e;Could this faithful missionary, hostess, and martyr be the historical woman behind Electa? With honesty about what can and cannot be proven, Dr. Reece presents a compelling case connecting Peter's wife, the elect woman in Babylon, the lady addressed in 2 John, and the Electa remembered by the Order of the Eastern Star.Inside, readers will discover:• What Scripture reveals about Peter's wife and household• How she may have served as a missionary partner and fellow minister• Why early Christian writers connected Electa with Babylon• How Rob Morris incorporated Electa into the Eastern Star• The historical evidence supporting and challenging the identification• Lasting lessons about hospitality, courage, service, marriage, and faithfulnessThe Elect Lady restores an almost-forgotten Christian woman to her place in the story of the early church. Her name may have disappeared from history, but her life still calls believers to open their doors, serve without seeking recognition, remain faithful when obedience becomes costly, and above all, remember the Lord.
