Die biometrische Authentifizierung (oder realistische Authentifizierung) wird in der Informatik als eine Form der Identifizierung und Zugangskontrolle verwendet. Biometrische Identifikatoren sind die unverwechselbaren, messbaren Merkmale, die zur Kennzeichnung und Beschreibung von Personen verwendet werden. Biometrische Identifikatoren werden häufig in physiologische und verhaltensbezogene Merkmale unterteilt. Physiologische Merkmale beziehen sich auf die Form des Körpers. Beispiele hierfür sind unter anderem Fingerabdruck, Handvenen, Gesichtserkennung, DNA, Handabdruck, Handgeometrie, Iriserkennung, Netzhaut und Geruch/Duft. Verhaltensmerkmale beziehen sich auf das Verhaltensmuster einer Person, einschließlich, aber nicht beschränkt auf den Tipprhythmus, den Gang und die Stimme. Einige Forscher haben den Begriff Behaviometrie geprägt, um die letztgenannte Klasse von biometrischen Merkmalen zu beschreiben.
