Im Februar 1935 trat der amerikanische Violinist Louis Krasner an Alban Berg mit der Bitte heran, ein Violinkonzert zu schreiben. Obwohl Berg die Arbeit an Lulu nur ungern unterbrechen wollte, konnte er aufgrund seiner finanziellen Situation diesen Auftrag kaum ablehnen. Erste Ideen zu dem Stück skizzierte er Mitte März und beabsichtigte, im Sommer in Kärnten das Violinkonzert fertig zu komponieren. Am 22. April, einige Tage vor Bergs Abreise von Wien nach Velden, ereignete sich jene Tragödie, welche die Programmatik und endgültige Form des Violinkonzerts entscheidend beeinflusste. Manon Gropius, die Tochter von Alma Mahler und Walter Gropius, starb an Kinderlähmung. Berg schrieb an Alma Mahler, dass er beabsichtige, sein Werk "dem Andenken eines Engels" zu widmen, in Erinnerung an Manon. Das Violinkonzert entstand zwischen Mai und August 1935 im Kärntner Waldhaus. (Douglas Jarman, 1996)
