Im ersten Band der Reihe werden Freuds Bemerkungen zum Trieb vorgestellt und kritisch erortert, insbesondere die Charakterisierung des Triebs als "e;Grenzbegriff zwischen Somatischem und Psychischem"e;. Es findet eine Einordnung verschiedener Fassungen des Konzepts in der Entwicklung des Freud'schen Werkes statt. Mit den Konzeptionen bei Melanie Klein und Jean Laplanche werden zwei Linien der Weiterentwicklung akzentuiert. Zudem findet das Verhaltnis von Trieb und Affekt Erwahnung. Schlielich wird gepruft, wie sich das Triebkonzept in Relation zu psychologischen Motivationstheorien, zur Neurobiologie und zur Konzeptualisierung vergleichbarer klinischer Phanomene durch andere therapeutische Richtungen setzen lasst. Falldarstellungen dienen der Veranschaulichung der Konzeptionen.
