Die "Nibelungen" sind im 19. Jahrhundert zu einem deutschen Heldenepos hochstilisiert worden. Der Stoff wurde in zahllosen literarischen Bearbeitungen aufgenommen. Hebbel hat dagegen die inneren Widersprüche einer zerfallenden Gesellschaftsordnung zum Bild einer Epochenwende gestaltet, in der er ein Gleichnis für die Zerrissenheit Deutschlands nach dem Scheitern der Revolution von 1848/49 sah. Die Werte der germanischen Archaik sind brüchig geworden, die Normen christlicher Lebenshaltung haben sich noch nicht durchgesetzt. Aus diesem Zwiespalt entspringen die Konflikte und führen in eine apokalyptische Katastrophe. Der Essay zeichnet die Problemlage und die Perspektive ihrer Bühnendarstellung am Beispiel der Inszenierung von Peter Schweiger nach.
