Im Herbst des Jahres 1900 stattete Rilke dem Grafiker und Maler Heinrich Vogeler in Worpswede bei Bremen einen längeren Besuch ab und lernte dabei die Mitglieder des dortigen Künstlerkreises kennen, darunter die Bildhauerin Clara Westhoff, die er im darauffolgenden Frühjahr heiratete. In seinem 1902 fertiggestellten Essaysammlung "Worpswede" porträtierte Rilke Mitglieder dieser Künstlerkolonie wie Fritz Mackensen, Otto Modersohn, Fritz Overbeck, Hans am Ende und Vogeler selbst. Kurz darauf verließ Rilke seine Frau und das gemeinsame Kind, um in Paris seine bekannte Monografie über Rodin zu schreiben.
