Composé à la manière d’un conte des Mille et Une Nuits qu’aurait retouché le Marquis de Sade si ce n’est M. G. Lewis (Le Moine avant l’heure), ce récit terrifiant serait issu de la plume de William Thomas Beckford, âgé alors de 22 ans, à la suite quelques nuits d’orgies.Écrit en français vers 1782, Vathek parait d’abord en traduction anglaise avant d’être publié à Lausanne en 1787. Ce curieux conte orientalisant n’a jamais cessé de susciter l’admiration et a inspiré de nombreux auteurs, à l’instar de Lord Byron, Edgar Allan Poe, Lovecraft, ou Borges, sans oublier Mallarmé dont nous rééditions ici la préface, imprimée à Genève en 1876.
