Sein bis heute berühmtestes Werk "Utopia", das der literarischen Gattung der positiven Zukunftsvisionen den Namen gab, veröffentlichte er 1516. Darin berichtet ein Seemann, der sich lange in dem idealen Inselstaat Utopia aufgehalten haben will, von seinen Erlebnisse, die im oftmals vom Autor satirisch überspitzten Widerspruch zur Staatspraxis der Renaissance stehen. So ist in der Republik Utopia das Privateigentum abgeschafft, es gilt die Gleichheit zwischen den Menschen, niemand ist zum Kriegsdienst gezwungen, Geld und Gold sind verpönt.
