Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) gehört neben Bach, Händel, Scarlatti und Couperin zu den bedeutendsten Meistern der Cembalomusik im 18. Jahrhundert. Dennoch beruht sein Prestige vor allem auf seinen Leistungen als Opernkomponist und Theoretiker. Mit der Uraufführung von "Hippolyte et Aricie" löste er 1733 den Streit zwischen Lullisten und Ramisten aus, mit seinem "Traité de l'harmonie" (1722)begründete er die moderne Harmonielehre. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist es zum einen, Rameaus vielgestaltiges Cembaloschaffen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven angemessen zu würdigen. Zum anderen soll es in der Tradition der "Clavecinistes" von Chambonničres bis Duphly ebenso verortet werden wie im sozio-kulturellen Kontext der französischen Aufklärung. Für den musikästhetischen Diskurs der Zeit kommen dabei die Komponisten ebenso zu Wort wie die Enzyclopädisten Diderot und d'Alembert. Ausgehend von der ab 1895 bei Durand erschienenen Gesamtausgabe wird auch die Bedeutung Rameaus für den französischen Historismus und seine Rezeption bei Saint-Saëns und Debussy diskutiert.
