En 1802, à 26 ans, Joseph Mallord William Turner est le plus jeune artiste jamais élu à la Royal Academy. Peintre et aquarelliste prolifique, son succès lui assure une indépendance et une liberté dont il va user tout au long de sa vie. Si ses tableaux mêlent d'abord les grands thèmes historiques aux visions inspirées de Claude Lorrain, ses recherches sur la lumière l'entraînent rapidement vers une dissolution inattendue des formes. Toujours en quête de lumières nouvelles, Turner n'a de cesse de parcourir la Grande-Bretagne, mais aussi l'Europe, des Alpes aux rives du Rhin, de Calais à Rome, de Nantes à Venise. Sa mort en 1851 va révéler, en même temps qu'une vie privée jalousement tenue secrète, un étonnant testament dans lequel l'artiste lègue à la nation anglaise sa fortune et plus de trente mille dessins, aquarelles et peintures pour créer un musée qui lui soit entièrement dédié.Olivier Meslay nous invite à suivre l'élaboration de cette peinture incandescente qui fait de l'oeuvre de Turner, entre romantisme et impressionnisme, l'un des plus remarquables apports de l'Angleterre à l'histoire de l'art européen.
