At dawn Alexis must carry out an act of violence against a tyrannical government. Hunted and exhausted he finds shelter in the last place he imagined: a brothel.

There he meets Liuba, a young woman surviving in a society that has already decided her worth. In their brief charged hours together, the unlikely pair find common ground in their search for meaning in a corrupt world. And as his mission looms closer Alexis begins to question his fight for humanity... and forget his own.

The Dark is a visceral exploration of moral ambiguity and existential despair-and what we're willing to destroy for our political beliefs. Perfect for readers of Dostoevsky, Turgenev, and Albert Camus.

LEONID ANDREYEV (1871-1919) was a leading voice of Russia's Silver Age, exploring death, madness, and existential dread with unflinching intensity. His work influenced a generation of European modernists and continues to resonate with readers seeking literature that confronts life's darkest questions. Andreyev died in exile in Finland, having witnessed the revolution that would reshape his homeland. The Dark was first published in English in 1922 by Leonard and Virginia Woolf's Hogarth Press-now reintroduced as the fourth installment in the ITNA ICONS Collection.
