The Cockatiel

The world's most popular first parrot - and the one most likely to scare itself to death in the dark.

The Cockatiel is the perfect introduction to parrot ownership: friendly, gentle, easy to train, and capable of learning beautiful whistled melodies. It's the second most popular pet bird in the world (after the budgie), and for very good reason.

But cockatiels have a vulnerability that catches owners off guard: night frights. A sudden noise, shadow, or light change at night can trigger a panicked thrashing episode that leads to broken blood feathers, injured wings, and sometimes fatal bleeding. Understanding and preventing night frights is essential.

Inside this guide, you'll discover:

Night fright prevention: what causes them, why cockatiels are more prone than other parrots, nightlight solutions, cage placement strategies, and exactly what to do during an episode to prevent injury

Blood feather emergencies: how to identify a broken blood feather, first aid techniques, when corn flour works and when you need a vet - the knowledge that can save your bird's life

Whistling training: step-by-step methods to teach melodies, songs, and whistled tunes - including why males learn faster and how to encourage females

Dust and dander: cockatiels produce significant powder down - management strategies for owners with allergies or respiratory sensitivities

Diet for a small cockatoo: yes, cockatiels are cockatoos - their dietary needs reflect this, including calcium requirements and seed-vs-pellet balance

Training the gentle learner: step-up, target training, recall, and building trust with a naturally gentle bird

Health and 15-25 year lifespan: fatty liver, respiratory issues, egg binding in females, and preventive care
