Tamango, escrita y publicada en 1829, se centra en un asunto que Merimée quiso denunciar, y que tuvo gran importancia en la época en que lo escribió: el comercio de esclavos o trata de negros. En 1815, pocos años antes de que Merimée publicara este relato, el Tratado de Viena había prohibido la trata de negros. A pesar de ello, esa práctica seguía llevándose a cabo ilegalmente, y este es el asunto del que da cuenta Merimée en Tamango. Un relato que refleja muy bien el desprecio por la dignidad y por la vida de sus semejantes que demostraban los comerciantes de esclavos, contado con la maestría habitual en su autor.
