Das Gesetzlichkeitsprinzip findet inzwischen weltweit Anerkennung. Professor Walter Kargl, Emeritus der Universität Hamburg, unternimmt in diesem Werk den "Versuch, das Strafrecht auf ein Fundament zu stellen, dass trotz der als erwiesen unterstellten Bedingungen durchgehender Kausalität und trotz der beschränkten menschlichen Erkenntnismöglichkeiten die staatliche Strafe zu legitimieren vermag". Er leuchtet in einer Gesamtschau das Gesetzlichkeitsprinzip als zentralem Pfeiler der Strafrechtsdogmatik aus. Nach einer Bestandsaufnahme dieses zentralen strafrechtlichen Grundsatzes wird den verschiedenen Begründungsansätzen des Gesetzlichkeitsprinzips (verfassungsrechtlich, strafrechtlich und rechtsphilosophisch) nachgegangen. Die einzelnen Ausformungen des Gesetzlichkeitsprinzips werden aufgefächert und behandelt. Kapitel zur Reichweite und zu den Sicherungen der Strafgesetzlichkeit bilden den Schlusspunkt.
