Oscar Wilde (eredeti nevén Fingal O'Flahertie Wills) 1854-ben született Dublinban, és 1900-ban hunyt el Párizsban. Wilde neve évtizedekig tabu volt az irodalmi életben, mivel egy botrány során kiderült róla, hogy meleg. Börtönbe került miatta, majd egy ott szerzett fülbetegségben hunyt el, miután élete utolsó oráján felvette a katolikus vallást. Méltó helyére csak 1954-ben, születésének centenáriuma alkalmából került az oktatásban és a hivatalos kritikákban egyaránt. Az Oxfordon töltött diákévek alatt nem csak feltűnő tájékozottságával és olvasottságával rítt ki társai közül, hanem folyamatos normaszegésével is. Nagy kockás tweedzakói, pávakék nyakkendője és hullámos karimájú kalapja összetéveszthetetlenné tette. A Punch című szatirikus hetilap karikatúrasorozatot indított róla, de Wilde ezt nem bánta, ingyenreklámként fogta fel, növelte az ismertségét. 1881-ben meghódította Amerikát és Kanadát, a saját költségén kiadott Versek (Poems) című művével járta be az ottani szalonokat, egyszerre lett híres és gazdag. Leghíresebb műve aDorian Gray arcképe (The Picture of Dorian Gray). Mostani kötetünket Tandori Dezső költő, műfordító válogatta. Az utószóból kiderül, hogy Wilde színes személyére egy kukában talált sportlap irányította a figyelmét.
