Heinrich Gerritsen, geboren im 1. Weltkrieg, wurde als Kleinkind lungenkrank und war dadurch in der Kindheit immer kränklich. Die Missionsschule musste er deshalb abbrechen. Jene Kinder aus dem Ruhrgebiet wurden ab 1922 von der Caritas zur Erholung in den Ferien nach Bayern auf einen Bauernhof geschickt. Entbehrung und Hunger prägten die Jahre zwischen den zwei Weltkriegen und weit darüber hinaus. Nach der kaufmännischen Ausbildung in München musste er zum Reichsarbeitsdienst und anschließend als Soldat in den 2. Weltkrieg. Diesen überlebte er als Kraftfahrer eines Militär-Gerätewagens nach Granateinschlägen zweimal. Als der Krieg zu Ende war, kam er in französiche Gefangenschaft, überstand eine schwere Krankheit und konnte nach 20 Monaten heimkehren nach München und Oberhausen/Rheinland.
