Il Simposio (o Convito) è l'opera più celebre e incantevole di Platone. Il tema centrale è l'eros, l'amore. A differenza della maggior parte delle opere del filosofo greco, il Simposio non è un vero e proprio dialogo. Esso si struttura, infatti, in una serie di discorsi pronunciati dai migliori intellettuali ateniesi durante un banchetto offerto dal poeta tragico Agatone per festeggiare la sua vittoria negli agoni delle Lenee, oppure alle Grandi Dionisie, del 416 a.C. I vari convitati presenti al banchetto, tra i quali Socrate, sono chiamati da Erissimaco ad esprimersi sul tema dell'eros. Il risultato è così suggestivo che, ancora oggi, il Simposio è ritenuto il testo simbolo dell'amore.
